Bracing
has been shown in studies to be an effective method to prevent curves
from getting worse as the child grows. Currently, the spine medical
community advocates bracing as the only non-surgical treatment for
idiopathic scoliosis. We generally utilize three different types
of scoliosis braces at Metropolitan Orthotic Laboratories, the TLSO,
the Nighttime Sidebending, and the Milwaukee.

The corrective TLSO
(Thoraco-Lumbo-Sacral Orthosis) is made from a custom mold of
the child's body. The orthosis applies pressure to the curve(s)
by use of corrective pads to prevent the curvature from progressing.
This brace is worn over a cotton t-shirt and underneath your regular
clothing.

The Nighttime
Sidebending orthosis is for use most commonly with a single
curve pattern. The orthosis applies pressure and bends the child
in the opposite direction of the curve. Often seen as a benefit
is the fact that the orthosis is worn only when the child is sleeping
or reclining.

 |
The Milwaukee
orthosis is used when a higher thoracic curve is present. Correction/holding
of the curve(s) is achieved by use of pads attached to vertical
bars. The whole orthosis consists of a neck ring attached to the
bars which in turn is attached to a plastic pelvic section.
